5 Spring Break Tips for Parents Working From Home

Updated: May 18, 2022

If your household is anything like mine, chances are, you're in the throws of figuring out the schedule for Spring Break. If your kiddos will be home the entire week and you still have work to get done, that can be a pretty tall order.

Here are 5 tips to help keep the kiddos occupied while you carve out some quiet time to kick things off your to-do list and still make some memories.

1. SET UP PLAY CENTERS/STATIONS AROUND THE HOUSE

This one is taken right out of the keep yourself busy preschool playbook. Set up themed stations around the house where kids can spend time doing one specific thing or playing with same themed toys. Allow kiddos to go station to station at their leisure or set up a timer to help keep the crew moving with fewer complaints. ("Mom, he got my station", or "Dad, she won't let me play with that", tends to be a little less with the timer).

2. ARRANGE YOUR SCHEDULE TO MAXIMIZE KIDDO SLEEP ZONES

If your kiddos naturally wake up around 7 am, adjust your morning schedule to start work at 4 am, that gives you 3 hours of uninterrupted work before the kiddos day gets started. This can also work on the other end as well if you are a night owl and can work after the kiddos lay down for the night.

3. SET UP YOUR OUTDOOR OFFICE

If you have a front or back yard big enough for the kids to play, make a makeshift office at your picnic table, piece of outdoor furniture or a blanket on the ground. Let the kiddos spend time enjoying the great outdoors and getting out some energy while you gain another hour or so to get some items off of your to do list.

4. PICNIC LUNCH AT THE PARK

Plan lunches at the closest park or school yard. FREE FUN and time for you to check out of work and be present with the kiddos. Enjoy the sun!

(PB&J, Fruit and a water bottle go a long way :), don't stress yourself out.)

5. AFTER LUNCH MOVIE TIME

After all of the front loaded play, a wind- down is in order. Let the kiddos pick an agreed upon movie when you get home from the park they can relax/nap/watch. This gives you the last bit of time needed to complete your last check ins for the day.
